The state announced on Thursday that it will replace the Buckeye Lake dam and keep the reservoir's water level at low pool until it does, making most boating on the lake impossible. Some of the 4,500 residents of Milton Township, including the 1,000 residents of the lakeside village of Craig Beach, understand the fears, hopes and raw emotions that the folks who live and work around Buckeye Lake are now experiencing. By 1988, a new dam was in place, and Lake Milton began the long process of reinventing itself. A year later, the gates were opened and the lake was drained. Army Corps of Engineers determined in 1985 that the 2,800-foot-long Lake Milton dam, built in 1913 of earth and concrete, was in critical need of repair. Instead, they were written nearly 30 years ago in the Akron Beacon Journal to describe Lake Milton, a 1,700-acre lake in Mahoning County. Those words could easily have been written to describe the current situation at Buckeye Lake. CRAIG BEACH, Ohio - The oldest, and some say best, fishing lake in the region has suffered from 70 years of governmental neglect, to the point where it had to be drained before it became a man-made flash flood.
